The actress lends her voice to tell the untold stories of women who lived through tragedy
Actress Yeom Hye-ran will serve as the narrator for a special documentary marking the 77th anniversary of the Yeosu–Suncheon Incident, bringing the voices of history to life through radio.
Remembering 1948 through women's voices
Yeosu MBC announced its three-part special radio documentary 1948: The Women (written by Lee Sun-hwa, directed by Song Yu-ra), which will air from October 15 to 17 on Yeosu MBC Standard FM.
The Yeosu–Suncheon Incident began in October 1948, when some Korean soldiers in Yeosu and Suncheon refused orders to suppress the Jeju 4·3 Uprising. The government responded by declaring martial law and launching a harsh crackdown that led to countless civilian casualties. Since the enactment of the Special Act in 2021, efforts have been underway to uncover the truth and restore the victims' honor.
1948: The Women focuses on the lives of women who lived through the turmoil. Through their testimonies, the documentary sheds light on the pain, loss, and resilience of those who endured the tragedy. Yeom Hye-ran will guide listeners as the voice that connects past and present.
A personal connection to history
Born and raised in Yeosu, Yeom brings deep emotional resonance to the project. She previously appeared in director Jeong Ji-young's film My Name Is, which explored the Jeju 4·3 Incident — another dark chapter of Korean modern history. Her participation once again underscores her commitment to amplifying historical narratives through art.
"Because this happened in my hometown of Yeosu, I felt an even deeper connection," Yeom shared. "Hearing the familiar place names while recording made my heart ache. Speaking through the voices of women and children from that time gave the project great meaning. I hope my voice brings some comfort to the surviving families."
Continuing a meaningful artistic journey
Beyond her documentary work, Yeom stars in Park Chan-wook's film No Choice (Eochul Suga Eopda), where she plays Ara, a woman who maintains confidence and romance despite repeated failures. The film has captivated audiences with her unpredictable and emotionally rich performance, nearing 3 million viewers at the box office.
Through both her acting and narration, Yeom Hye-ran continues to bridge history, empathy, and storytelling — ensuring that the voices of forgotten women are finally heard.
