Disney+'s upcoming original series "The Illusion" has been swept up in speculation about canceling its planned filming in China — but the production team has clarified that no overseas location has been finalized.
On October 15, production company Showbox told Dispatch, "The China location has not been confirmed," adding, "We are still in the process of reviewing and organizing potential filming sites."
The company remained cautious about specifying foreign locations, stating, "Several regions are being discussed, and we are considering multiple options."
Clarifying the Rumors
The cancellation rumor originated from a media report suggesting that rising anti-Korean sentiment in China, possibly linked to dialogue controversies surrounding "Polaris," led to production changes. However, Showbox dismissed the claim, emphasizing that nothing had been officially decided.
"The Illusion" is slated for release next year and is currently filming both in Korea and abroad. A source shared, "Much of the domestic filming has already been completed, and overseas shoots are also underway."
A Mystery Historical Drama
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, "The Illusion" is a mystery period drama centered on a poor painter who accepts a commission to paint a woman's portrait, only to encounter a series of eerie and unsettling events.
Suzy stars as Song Jung-hwa, a captivating woman hiding a mysterious secret, while Kim Seon-ho plays Yoo Yi-ho, an unknown painter drawn into confusion and obsession.
The series is directed by Han Jae-rim, known for his distinctive storytelling through acclaimed works such as "The Face Reader," "The King," "Emergency Declaration," and "The 8 Show."
(Cultural context: International location choices for Korean dramas often attract attention, especially in China, where public sentiment toward Korean media has fluctuated in recent years. Showbox's clarification reflects the industry's cautious approach to global filming amid diplomatic sensitivities.)
