Actor and producer Kim Nam-gil's short film The Way to Open the Door has earned top honors in the short film competition at the Sharjah International Film Festival for Children & Youth in the United Arab Emirates.
Directed by Park Ji-wan and Heo Ji-ye, the film follows Haneul (played by Chae Seo-eun), a young woman preparing for independent life who embarks on a fantastical journey to reclaim her lost home. The story blends realism with fantasy to explore themes of growth, loss, and self-discovery.
Festival organizers praised the work for its creativity and emotional depth, noting that "the film delivers a powerful message through symbolic and imaginative storytelling that deeply resonates with audiences."
Kim Nam-gil, who served as executive producer and made a special appearance as Chul-soo, expressed his gratitude, saying, "This film carries a message that transcends borders. I'm deeply thankful for the love it has received both in Korea and abroad, and honored by this international recognition."
Produced by Gil Story ENT and KB Kookmin Bank, in collaboration with the cultural NGO Gil Story, the film previously sold out screenings at the 29th Busan International Film Festival and was officially invited to the Fantasia International Film Festival and the Sharjah International Film Festival. It is also set to be screened at the Tokyo Short Shorts Film Festival on October 22.
Kim added, "I will continue to explore new creative challenges that help share the value of K-content with the world."
