RM Delivers Keynote at APEC: Calls for Global Support for Creative Culture Ecosystem
by. ymchoi

RM of BTS delivered a keynote address at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit, urging world leaders to build an inclusive ecosystem where creators can thrive.

On October 29, at the Gyeongju Arts Center, RM spoke for about ten minutes under the theme "Cultural Creative Industries and the Soft Power of K-Culture in the APEC Region." He reflected on K-pop's journey through the eyes of a creator and emphasized the importance of cultural collaboration and economic support for creativity.

"It's an honor to meet the key figures of APEC here in Korea, where I was born and raised," he began. "As an artist, I take great pride in seeing culture elevated as one of APEC's core agendas for the first time this year."

From Struggles to Global Resonance

RM revisited the early days of BTS's overseas journey. "A decade ago, we couldn't have imagined standing on a stage like this," he said. "Performing songs in Korean for English-speaking audiences was never easy. The cultural barriers were immense, and we had to hand out flyers and dance on the streets just to be noticed."

Those challenges, he said, only strengthened the group's resolve. "Today, I'm here beyond those walls because of ARMY — the fans who have transcended language and borders through our music."

K-pop as a Bridge of Cultures

He described K-pop not as a single genre but as a cultural synthesis. "K-pop's strength lies in its unique fusion — embracing Western musical elements while preserving Korea's aesthetics, emotions, and production systems," he explained. "Its success does not come from cultural superiority, but from openness and balance."

Investing in Creativity and Diversity

RM called for global efforts to empower creators. "Please provide both the financial support and opportunities for creative talents around the world to flourish," he said. He stressed that cultural and artistic investment is not merely economic but deeply human. "Culture and art move hearts; they are the fastest, most powerful conveyors of diversity and inclusion."

He concluded, "When creators are free to express their imagination, they will generate new values that transcend borders. Their work will open paths toward understanding, inclusion, and collective hope. As an artist, I promise to continue delivering courage, hope, and the spirit of unity through music."
