K-Pop Demon Hunters sequel in the works aiming for 2029 release
by. ymchoi

Netflix's hit animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel, according to international media reports.

Global follow-up confirmed

Bloomberg reported on November 5 (KST) that Netflix has signed a production deal with Sony Pictures Animation for K-Pop Demon Hunters 2. The sequel is currently targeting a 2029 release, though both Netflix and Sony have declined to provide official confirmation.

From streaming sensation to box-office success

The original film followed Hunt-rix, a girl group that doubles as demon hunters battling the Lion Boys. Since premiering on Netflix in June, the movie has taken the world by storm, becoming the platform's most-watched film ever and surpassing 300 million views—an unprecedented record based on total watch hours divided by runtime.

Its popularity even led to a theatrical sing-along version, which grossed 25 million USD (approximately 36.1 billion KRW) in North America alone.

Music that topped the charts

The official soundtrack also became a global hit, with songs like Golden, Your Idol, Soda Pop, and How It's Done all reaching the upper tiers of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Director's vision for the sequel

Director Maggie Kang previously expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the franchise. "I believe there's still more to explore with these characters," she said. During interviews in Korea, she added, "I already have ideas for the sequel and I'm excited about it. I want to showcase a wider range of Korean music genres."
