Actress Song Hye-kyo is working to amplify the legacy of Korea's female independence activists.
On November 17, Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University released a four-minute video titled "Breaking Barriers, Crying Out for Independence: Gisaeng Kim Hyang-hwa" in honor of Korea's Martyrs' Day. The project was planned by Professor Seo and sponsored by Song Hye-kyo, featuring both Korean and English narration for global audiences.
The film highlights the independence movement led by Kim Hyang-hwa and around 30 gisaeng activists. It recounts how they raised the Taegeukgi and joined the March 1st Movement at Hwaseong Haenggung, continuing their cries for independence even in front of the local police station. Their courage later inspired gisaeng protest movements across the country.
Professor Seo explained that the goal was to shed new light on female independence fighters who remain under-recognized. He added that he plans to continue this work in partnership with Song Hye-kyo.
For the past 14 years, Song and Professor Seo have collaborated on numerous historical preservation efforts, donating Korean-language guidebooks, signage, and relief artworks honoring independence activists to 39 heritage sites worldwide.
