Comedian Lee Chang-ho is joining the second Korean season of the musical Beetlejuice as a comedy adapter for the Korean script.
Based on Tim Burton's 1988 film, Beetlejuice returns about four years after its 2021 Korean premiere, promising stronger K-humor and relatable charm. The story follows a newly deceased couple who team up with Beetlejuice—stuck between the world of the living and the dead—to chase out the strange family that moves into their home.
Localization is key to preserving the musical's signature black comedy. Lee will collaborate with the translators to enhance comedic elements and create a dynamic synergy.
Lee gained wide popularity through the "Musical Star" series on his YouTube channel Bbang Song Guk, blending musical numbers with comedic sketches. His "Land of Lola" parody video—where he appeared as "Jwirola"—has surpassed 10 million views.
This time, he steps beyond parody to contribute to an actual musical script, infusing the narrative with his sharp sense of era and inventive humor.
"When I first received the offer, I thought it was a prank," he shared. "I've put a lot of thought into adapting a Broadway work into comedic language that resonates with Korean audiences."
The cast includes Jung Sung-hwa, Jung Won-young, and Kim Junsu as Beetlejuice, with Hong Na-hyun and Jang Min-je as Lydia. Park Hye-mi and Na Hana will play Barbara, completing a powerful lineup.
The production will run from December 16 to March 22 at LG Art Center Seoul's LG Signature Hall.
