Ryu Seung-ryong is lending his talent to an independent documentary—essentially without compensation—showing support for a project rooted in cultural value rather than commercial appeal.
According to his agency PrainTPC, Pasi is a film Ryu chose to join personally, not as part of his commercial portfolio. He will appear as the project's moderator, guiding the narrative throughout the documentary.
A Documentary on Island and Ocean History
Pasi, produced by the Island Research Institute, explores the history of islands and maritime culture. Its title refers to a "market on the waves," symbolizing the life and movement of island communities.
Director Kang Jae-yoon expressed deep gratitude, noting that "it's a tremendous gift to have a top-tier actor—one who typically commands multi-billion-won guarantees—agree to participate." The director emphasized that Ryu's role is not a brief cameo but a central moderating presence leading the film's story.
A Commitment Beyond Profit
Although technically listed as "running guarantee," the participation is effectively unpaid. Kang described the project as a non-commercial archival film, making Ryu's decision a near no-fee contribution. Following his recent drama Seoul Apartment, Big Company Manager Kim Bu-jang's Story, this marks his first new move—one shaped by meaning rather than market value.
Director Kang further highlighted that Ryu's choice "reflects an artist who values purpose over profit," predicting the documentary will become a meaningful contribution to Korea's island and maritime historical record.
Ryu recently appeared in the above-mentioned drama and narrated the YTN documentary Again, Forest.
