Actor Ryu Seung-ryong will guide viewers through the unseen realities of modern zoos as the narrator of an upcoming documentary.
SBS announced that Ryu participated as the narrator for the SBS Special episode titled Strange Zoo, adding depth and resonance with his distinctive, grounded voice.
Known for his long-standing interest in nature, Ryu shared that he was deeply moved by "the stories of people who hope to change the world beyond zoos by improving the lives of animals."
The episode centers on veterinarian Kim Jung-ho, often referred to as the "Lee Guk-jong of veterinary medicine." A leading authority in wildlife treatment, Kim has performed complex procedures such as ovarian surgery on lions and claw-removal surgery on tigers.
Rather than opening a private animal hospital, Kim chose to work at a zoo to focus on treating wild animals. His workplace, Cheongju Zoo, is home to an equally remarkable team dedicated to animal welfare.
The production team followed the zoo for 18 months, capturing behind-the-scenes moments unseen by visitors and tracing how the facility came to be known as a "strange zoo."
The documentary also features the rescue of "Rib Lion" Baram, the process of introducing lioness Dodo to a new companion, and efforts to save Iho, the oldest tiger in Korea, including surgery and moments of human–animal bonding.
Beyond life, the cameras also observe moments after death. Producers explained that the episode raises questions about coexistence through the animals' heartbreaking yet beautiful stories.
The SBS Special episode Strange Zoo, narrated by Ryu Seung-ryong, will air on January 18 at 11:05 p.m. on SBS.
