The opening set the tone with an edge straight out of a noir film. A soundtrack reminiscent of New World played as Cha Seung-won appeared as the boss of a so-called "gangsta family," flanked by Choo Sung-hoon as his right-hand man and a mysterious member named Tommy. Together, they kicked off a journey to explore Korea's boldest spicy flavors.
tvN's Cha-ga-ne premiered its first episode on January 8. Cha declared his mission to develop a signature K-spicy sauce, assembling his unconventional crew and heading to Bangkok, Thailand, for their first expedition.
The concept felt instantly fresh. Mixing cooking and travel with real-deal variety elements and a tongue-in-cheek gangsta sitcom vibe, the show delivered a recipe rarely seen on Korean television.
The cast chemistry stood out. Cha Seung-won, known for his dependable "Cha-jumma" image, paired with the tough-talking yet warm-hearted Choo Sung-hoon, creating a striking contrast that fueled much of the humor.
A surprise scene-stealer was Tommy. Best known as Choo Sung-hoon's striking coach, he has also trained UFC fighters like Jung Chan-sung, as well as K-pop stars such as Jungkook and Cha Eun-woo. Calm and composed, he anchored the group in unfamiliar surroundings, balancing the playful bickering of the two seniors.

Tommy didn't stay silent for long. His witty comebacks and understated humor added another layer of fun, elevating him beyond the role of a quiet youngest member.
The experiment paid off early. According to Nielsen Korea, the premiere recorded an average nationwide rating of 2.7%, peaking at 3.3%, taking first place in its time slot.
Episode two will expand the crew, welcoming DinDin and Danny Koo as new members. The spicy quest will continue across various parts of Asia.
Cha-ga-ne airs every Thursday at 8:40 p.m. on tvN.
