Actors Park Bo-gum and Joo Won will star together in director Kim Han-min's upcoming film.
On January 15, the distributor unveiled the cast lineup for Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan, confirming Park Bo-gum, Joo Won, Jung Jae-young, Lee Sun-bin, and Kim Hyung-seo.
The film is a historical action epic set after the fall of Goguryeo. It follows a man who loses his memory, becomes a slave, and enters a brutal gladiator tournament centered around a legendary sword.
Park Bo-gum plays Chilseong, an amnesiac warrior forced into slave combat. His character's arc spans desperate survival battles to an awakening as the legendary hero known as the "Red Wolf."
Joo Won takes on the role of Gyepil Haryeok, a warrior from the Göktürk tribes who stands in direct opposition to Chilseong. He is expected to deliver intense, high-difficulty dual-sword action, heightening the film's central conflict.
Jung Jae-young portrays Heuksugang, leader of the Goguryeo restoration army and Chilseong's mentor, a figure driven by the dream of reviving the fallen kingdom. Lee Sun-bin appears as Maya, a mysterious member of the restoration forces, while Kim Hyung-seo plays Injeong, Heuksugang's daughter, adding further energy to the ensemble.
Directed by Kim Han-min—known for War of the Arrows and the Yi Sun-sin trilogy—the film is set in 668 AD, shortly after Goguryeo's collapse, against the backdrop of Liaodong Fortress. It brings to the forefront a rarely explored theme: Goguryeo-style gladiatorial sword combat.
Kim stated that the film aims to capture the sharp yet weighty energy of a "sword" cutting through the chaos of the post-Goguryeo era, blending historical pain with personal destiny to present a distinctly Korean worldview. He also expressed confidence in the birth of a new K-action hero franchise.
Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan is scheduled to begin production with a target theatrical release next summer.
