Actor Lee Jun Hyuk has confirmed his lead role in the upcoming SBS Friday–Saturday drama Awakening.
On January 28, the production team revealed the main cast lineup, announcing Lee Jun Hyuk as exorcist priest Antonio. The series is directed by Oh Jun Hyuk and marks Lee's first challenge in the occult exorcism genre.
Awakening is an occult thriller centered on a series of mysterious deaths involving students who begin hearing the voices of the dead. As the incidents escalate, Father Antonio steps in, determined to uncover the truth and save the students.
Lee Jun Hyuk's character appears outwardly detached but possesses deep empathy and emotional sensitivity. Assigned to Holy Spirit High School, Antonio investigates the supernatural events unfolding within the campus.
Antonio is portrayed as an ascetic figure who endures pain in silence. Willing to sacrifice everything, he relentlessly pursues the entity driving students toward death.
This project marks Lee Jun Hyuk's first foray into the occult genre, expanding his already wide acting spectrum. He has previously delivered strong performances in genre-driven works such as Stranger, Designated Survivor: 60 Days, and The Roundup: No Way Out.
A production insider teased, "Lee Jun Hyuk will appear in full priest attire," adding that viewers can expect a completely new side of the actor.
Awakening is scheduled to air next year on SBS.
