Shim Eun-kyung has once again stunned the Japanese film industry, winning Best Actress for her performance in Travel and Days, directed by Shô Miyake.
On January 29, Kinema Junpo announced the winners of the 99th Kinema Junpo Best Ten Awards on its official website. Shim was selected as this year's Best Actress.
"I'm grateful for this wonderful honor," she said. "I was already happy just to have met this film like a miracle, so receiving this award makes me truly joyful." She also expressed hope that audiences would be captivated by Shô Miyake's cinematic world as portrayed in Travel and Days.
Founded in 1919, Kinema Junpo is Japan's leading film magazine and its annual Best Ten Awards are regarded as one of the country's most prestigious honors in cinema.
This marks the first time a Korean actress has received the Best Actress award from Kinema Junpo. It is also the first win by a non-Japanese actress in 33 years, following Ruby Moreno's recognition for The Moon Is… the Sun's Dream.
Travel and Days, starring Shim Eun-kyung, was also ranked No. 1 in the Kinema Junpo Best Ten list, achieving a double win alongside her Best Actress honor.
Shim previously earned widespread acclaim in Japan for The Journalist, winning Best Actress at the Japan Academy Film Prize, the Mainichi Film Awards, and the Takasaki Film Festival.
The Kinema Junpo Awards ceremony will be held on February 19.
