The film Bedford Park, produced by actor Son Suk-ku's company Stanum, has earned a Jury Special Award at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.
On February 2, the film's team announced that Bedford Park, directed by Stephanie Ahn, received the Jury Special Award for a Feature Film Debut in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, the festival's top competitive section, at the 42nd Sundance Film Festival.
The film held its world premiere on January 28 (local time), filling the 1,200-seat Eccles Theatre and drawing a standing ovation immediately after the screening. The jury praised the work, stating that it "bravely shares a deeply personal story" and "overturns audience preconceptions with both depth and craft."
Bedford Park tells the story of Audrey, a Korean American woman played by Choi Hee-seo, and Eli, portrayed by Son Suk-ku, who was adopted at a young age. The film follows their relationship as they meet and gradually heal each other's emotional wounds.
The Hollywood Reporter described the performances as "a delicate portrayal of the relationship between two untamed, lonely souls," while critic Manohla Dargis noted that the film "convincingly captures the emotions of confronting everyday life after emerging from personal isolation."
Following its Sundance success, Bedford Park also finalized a worldwide distribution deal with Sony Pictures Classics. Among the 90 independent films invited to this year's festival, only four have secured global distribution agreements so far.
A representative from Stanum commented that, with global release preparations now underway, special focus will be placed on the film's Korean theatrical release in hopes of connecting with a wide audience.
