Shim Eun-kyung is stepping onto the theater stage for the first time.
Her agency Pangfare announced on February 19 that she has confirmed her appearance in the National Theater Company of Korea's new production Vanya Uncle (Korean title: Banya Ajae), where she will play Seo Eun-hee (Sonya).
Vanya Uncle is a reinterpretation of Anton Chekhov's classic Uncle Vanya, newly adapted to explore the absurdity of life and human fate through a comedic lens.
A New Challenge on Stage
Shim Eun-kyung will portray Seo Eun-hee, the niece of Park I-bo (Vanya). The character lives diligently but carries the pain of unrequited love and insecurities about her appearance.
She will share the stage with veteran actors including Cho Sung-ha, Son Sook, Nam Myung-ryul, Ki Joo-bong, and Jung Kyung-soon, raising anticipation for strong onstage chemistry.
"Acting still feels difficult and like homework every time," Shim said. "I'm excited to breathe together with the audience on stage, but I also feel a strong sense of responsibility."
She added, "I want to prepare sincerely and deliver a small but lasting resonance to the audience who comes to see the play."
Vanya Uncle will run from May 22 to 31 at the Haoreum Theater of the National Theater of Korea.
