The King and the Man has captured attention beyond Korea, earning an official invitation to the main competition section of the 28th Udine Far East Film Festival.
The festival will take place from April 24 to May 2 in Udine, a city in northern Italy. Recognized as Europe's largest festival dedicated to Asian cinema, the Udine Far East Film Festival highlights films with distinctive cultural identities and strong storytelling.
Global Spotlight on Korean Cinema
A number of Korean films have previously been invited to the festival, including The Night Owl, Deliver Us from Evil, and The Man Standing Next. Director Jang Hang-jun also won the Audience Award with Rebound.
Festival executive chair Sabrina Baracetti praised the film, stating that director Jang Hang-jun and the cast created a work that delivers both emotional depth and entertainment value. She added that, although based on real events, the film maintains a balanced tone that allows global audiences to connect comfortably with its story.
A Story of Exile and Humanity
The King and the Man centers on the dethroned King Danjong, portrayed by Park Jihoon, and depicts the final chapter of his life in exile in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province.
Blending humor and poignancy with strong performances, the film continues its box office momentum even after the holiday season, recording a cumulative audience of 4,414,705 viewers.
