Big Ocean, widely known as the world's first deaf idol group, has returned with a bold new chapter.
On March 3, Big Ocean held a media showcase at the Shocking K-Pop Center in Mapo, Seoul, celebrating the release of their third mini album The Greatest Battle. Since debuting in 2024, the trio has carved out unprecedented ground in K-pop, challenging perceptions surrounding hearing disabilities through music and performance.
From Different Paths to One Shared Fight
Before debut, the members led entirely different lives. Jiseok was an alpine ski athlete, PJ worked as a YouTube creator, and Chanyeon served as an audiologist at a university hospital. What united them was a shared determination to confront prejudice against the hearing-impaired.
"We've each fought our own battles against bias," Jiseok said. "We want to give strength to everyone fighting their own fight."
The album features eight tracks, including double title songs "One Man Army" and "Cold Moon," alongside "Alive" and "Back." Instrumental versions of all tracks are also included.
The overarching theme is "battle." Departing from their earlier bright and hopeful image, Big Ocean embraces a more intense and restrained atmosphere, signaling a transformative era. The tracklist unfolds like a war narrative: declaring survival in "Alive," choosing solitary combat in "One Man Army," rising again in "Back," and reaching emotional maturity in "Cold Moon."

"One Man Army": The Wave That Turns the Tide
The title track "One Man Army" marks the beginning of the battle, embodying unwavering resolve in the face of despair. Inspired by Admiral Yi Sun-sin's Myeongnyang naval battle, the song parallels the group's journey.
Their fandom name, "Pado" (meaning "wave"), ties directly into this symbolism—just as fierce currents reversed the tide at Myeongnyang, fans are described as the driving force behind victory.
All members participated in composing. Chanyeon explained that they aimed to convey urgency through constant discussion and collaboration. PJ reflected on learning music from deaf composers, emphasizing that while technology assists, musical understanding ultimately resides in bodily sensation and muscle memory.
The performance incorporated naval battle imagery, with ship-shaped formations and crane-wing choreography. Twenty dancers expressed opposing forces through sign-language-inspired tutting, while heavy 808 bass and traditional military sounds heightened tension.
In contrast, "Cold Moon" explores emotional growth after battle, blending bright synth-pop with a new-disco groove. The restrained emotional delivery contrasts with the lively soundscape, with sign-language choreography in the chorus becoming a key highlight.
Beyond Limits
The name Big Ocean symbolizes limitless potential spreading across the world. Yet synchronizing rhythm posed challenges, as members perceive tempo differently depending on their level of hearing. They relied on assistive devices, lip-reading, and intensive mirror rehearsals to align movements.
Despite these hurdles, global support poured in even before debut, with fans from Brazil, the United States, Indonesia, and beyond expressing admiration for their courage.
The group also addressed their use of AI during recording, expressing hope to establish a positive precedent for technology in music creation.
As for the label they hope to earn, Jiseok shared a clear ambition: to be recognized as an idol group driven by fierce determination.
Big Ocean released The Greatest Battle on major streaming platforms at 6 p.m. KST on March 3, launching what they describe as their most intense fight yet.
