Director Jang Hang-jun has walked back his bold box-office promise for the film The Man Who Lives with the King, replacing it with a coffee truck event for fans.
Jang appeared on the Bae Sung‑jae's Ten on March 4 alongside producer Jang Won-seok, CEO of BA Entertainment. During the broadcast, he addressed the extravagant pledge he previously made regarding the film's box-office performance.
Earlier, Jang jokingly promised extreme measures—such as changing his name, undergoing plastic surgery, or even naturalizing abroad—if the film surpassed 10 million viewers.
He clarified that the remarks were meant purely as humor. "It was obviously a ridiculous joke," he said. "But once people started calling it a real pledge, the production company even held a crisis meeting about it."
From Bold Promise to Coffee Truck Event
Reflecting on the situation, the director laughed it off. "Looking back, it's actually fortunate I said something that unrealistic. Imagine if I had promised to give away half my fortune."
Instead, he revealed a more practical plan: a coffee truck event to thank audiences.
"Honestly, how can anyone keep every promise they casually make?" he joked. "So we're preparing a coffee truck event."
According to distributor Showbox, the event will take place at noon on March 12 near the Seoul Shinmun Square in Jung-gu, Seoul. Jang Hang-jun will attend in person to greet moviegoers and citizens, offering drinks and expressing gratitude for their support.
9 Million Viewers and Counting
Meanwhile, The Man Who Lives with the King surpassed 9 million moviegoers on March 2 and is now approaching the coveted 10-million-viewer milestone.
