Actor Koo Kyo-hwan is set to portray the uneasy inner world of a modern man in the upcoming drama Everyone Is Fighting Their Own Worthlessness.
On March 5, the production team of the new weekend series on JTBC released the first still images of Koo Kyo-hwan's character.
A Dreaming Director Struggling with Self-Doubt
Koo Kyo-hwan plays Dong-man, a man who has spent 20 years dreaming of debuting as a film director. Consumed by anxiety, he talks constantly in an attempt to suppress the unease that fills his mind.
The newly revealed stills capture Dong-man's bittersweet moments—trying to catch falling leaves or shouting his own name from a neighborhood hilltop.
He is also known for wearing a leather coat belonging to a World War II veteran every day. Even while weighed down by the harshness of reality, he raises the coat collar with a peculiar sense of romantic stubbornness.
"Like a Maltese with Tear Stains"
Dong-man's jealousy and insecurity reflect a desperate struggle to assert his existence. He is deeply afraid that his own sense of worthlessness will be exposed or that he will be abandoned by the world.
The character is described as being "like a Maltese with tear stains"—a metaphor for someone who carries hidden sorrow while barking at those who seem more successful.
Through Dong-man, Koo Kyo-hwan is expected to portray a universal emotion many people experience today: anxiety. At the same time, the character will reveal honest inner feelings that many prefer to hide.
Everyone Is Fighting Their Own Worthlessness follows a man who struggles with envy and frustration among more successful friends while searching for his own peace. The drama is scheduled to premiere next month.
