Nam Kyung-joo has been removed from teaching duties at Hongik University after being referred to prosecutors on allegations of sexual assault.
The university's Public Relations Office confirmed on March 12 in a phone interview that personnel measures are currently being taken in accordance with institutional regulations.
Because the actor is under investigation for a sex-related crime, he has reportedly been temporarily excluded from work. Although the new academic semester has already begun, he has not taken part in lectures at the university or its graduate programs.
Teaching Career Ends After Six Years
Nam Kyung-joo had been teaching students as a professor in the Department of Performing Arts at Hongik University since 2020. Until December last year, he also served as the supervising professor for a campus musical production.
However, his teaching career at the university has effectively ended after about six years.
Last month, Bangbae Police Station referred Nam to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on charges of rape by abuse of authority.
Veteran Musical Actor
In a phone interview with Dispatch on March 10, Nam acknowledged that the investigation is ongoing but declined to comment further on the allegations.
Nam Kyung-joo is considered one of the first-generation musical actors in Korea. He has starred in major productions including "Guys and Dolls," "West Side Story," "Rent," "Evita," and "Chicago."
