The hit Korean crime film Inside Men (2015) is being reborn as a prequel trilogy—this time as a series of films rather than a drama.
Production company Hive Media Corp announced on March 16 that Inside Men will be newly developed into a three-part film project. Originally considered as a drama, the project has been restructured into a cinematic trilogy.
Based on the webtoon of the same name, Inside Men explores the intertwined power dynamics between politicians, media, and conglomerates. The original film drew over 7.07 million viewers, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated Korean film of all time.
The upcoming trilogy shifts its timeline back to the 1980s. It will depict the origins of the powerful cartel formed through media, capital, and political influence, offering a deeper look into the beginnings of the "insiders."
Directors Kim Min-beom and Kim Jin-seok will helm the project. Kim Min-beom previously worked as assistant director on 12.12: The Day, while Kim Jin-seok served as assistant director on The Man Standing Next.
The screenplay will be written by Lee Ki-cheol, known for The Thieves, Assassination, and Harbin. Writer Kim Hyo-seok joins as adapter, aiming to deliver a more fast-paced narrative.
Pre-production for the trilogy began last year. Parts one and two are scheduled to be filmed simultaneously within this year, while the third installment is targeted for filming next year. Production will commence once casting is finalized.
Meanwhile, Inside Men is preparing to begin filming in the first half of this year.
