Singer-actress IU is making her comeback with a uniquely charming role.
MBC's new Friday-Saturday drama The 21st Century Grand Prince's Wife is set to premiere on April 10 at 9:40 PM. Ahead of its release, IU personally introduced her character and shared her thoughts on the project.
The drama is a romance set in a fictional 21st-century constitutional monarchy in Korea. It tells the story of a wealthy chaebol woman, frustrated by her commoner status, and a prince who, despite being the king's son, cannot have anything.
IU plays Seong Hee-joo, a CEO who has it all—beauty, talent, and wealth—but constantly faces the limitations of her social standing. She described the character using three keywords: "ambition, temper, and cuteness."
IU revealed that the drama's unique title first caught her attention. She added that each character's individuality stood out, and she was especially drawn to Hee-joo's unpredictable behavior and the motivation behind it.
"At first, her uncontrollable ambition and sharp personality are prominent, but as the story progresses and her emotional void is filled, she begins to show more cute and admirable sides," IU explained, hinting at a character full of contrast.
She also pointed to Hee-joo's defining trait—her proactive nature. In building a relationship with Grand Prince Ian (played by Byeon Woo-seok), Hee-joo sets aside her pride and persistently pushes forward, showcasing her determination.
IU highlighted the emotional turning point when Hee-joo's feelings toward Ian begin to change, noting that it reveals the character's depth. She also aimed to portray a woman who has always had to prove herself and appear strong since childhood.
"She is skilled at hiding her vulnerability behind harsh expressions, but I didn't want to miss the moments where her loneliness and fragility naturally show," IU said. "I worked to create contrast through voice and facial expressions."
As key points to watch, IU selected the fast-paced development in the first half, the tightly woven emotional dynamics between characters, and the deep, heartfelt romance in the latter half.
The 21st Century Grand Prince's Wife will premiere on April 10.
