BTS's upcoming comeback has unexpectedly stirred controversy over the color choice of Seoul's citywide lighting event.
Ahead of the group's return, Seoul Metropolitan Government announced a special illumination project from March 20 to 21, lighting up 15 major landmarks including Namsan Seoul Tower, Seoul City Hall, Cheonggyecheon, and Sebitseom. The initiative aims to celebrate BTS's comeback while offering a unique nightscape experience for citizens and tourists.
However, the chosen color—red—has triggered debate. BTS is globally associated with purple, a color symbolizing their bond with fans. Instead, the city selected red as the theme color, prompting questions and criticism.
Some observers pointed out that the decision comes ahead of local elections in June, raising speculation about potential political implications. The current Seoul mayor's affiliated party is also symbolized by the color red.
Fans have voiced their concerns across social media, using hashtags such as "#BTSisPurple" and "#방탄은보라색," emphasizing that purple remains the group's defining identity.
The lighting theme has since become a focal point of discussion, drawing attention beyond the comeback itself.
