Bong Joon Ho is stepping into new territory with his next project.
According to production company Barunson C&C, the director has been developing his first feature-length animated film Ally since 2019. Yoo Jae Sun, known for the film Sleep, is participating as a co-writer.
A Global-Scale Animation Project
As Bong Joon Ho's first full-length animation, Ally is being produced as a large-scale global project. Top-tier production teams from 12 countries, including Korea, have joined forces.
DNEG—recognized for its work on films like Inception and Dune—is handling the 3D animation production. Kim Jae Hyung will serve as animation supervisor.
Marcin Jakubowski, who contributed to the Klaus, is onboard as production designer. Additionally, David Lipman, known for involvement in Shrek, is participating in production.
Global Investment and Distribution Strategy
Investment and distribution are also globally structured. CJ ENM and Venture Invest are managing a dedicated K-content investment fund, while Pathé is handling international investment and distribution.
CJ ENM and Venture Invest will oversee distribution in regions including Korea, Vietnam, and Türkiye, while Pathé will manage territories such as France and Switzerland.
A Deep-Sea Adventure Story
Ally follows deep-sea creatures living in an underwater canyon who grow curious about the human world. The story centers on a baby pig squid and its friends as they are swept into an unexpected adventure.
The film is currently aiming to complete production in the first half of 2027.
