The film Salmokji has debuted at No.1 at the box office, signaling a strong start.
According to the Korean Film Council, Salmokji drew 89,913 viewers on its opening day (April 8), bringing its cumulative audience to 116,826.
This marks the highest opening score for a horror film since The Medium (120,000 viewers). It also surpassed the opening record of the Hollywood sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, which recorded around 70,000 viewers.
Horror Surge in April Theaters
The film is expected to spark a horror boom in April. As of 8 AM on April 9, it holds a CGV Golden Egg Index score of 91%, reflecting strong audience reception.
Mystery Unfolds at a Reservoir
Salmokji is a horror story set around a secluded reservoir. The plot follows a film crew that encounters an unknown presence lurking beneath the water.
Actress Kim Hye-yoon plays Han Soo-in, a producer who experiences a series of unexplained incidents during a work trip. Lee Jong-won stars as her former lover Ki-tae, marking his screen debut in a leading role.
Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary ranked No.2 with 32,099 viewers, followed by The King and the Clown at No.3 with 27,524 admissions.
