Director Yeon Sang-ho will step onto the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival with his new film 'Colony.'

'Colony' has been officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, which opens on May 12. The section highlights genre films that balance artistic merit and mainstream appeal.

The Midnight Screening lineup has previously featured works such as 'Veteran 2,' 'Hunt,' and 'The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil.'

Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux described the film as "a zombie story set inside a sealed building," directed by Yeon Sang-ho, known for Train to Busan. He added that audiences would be able to imagine a wide range of narrative devices and storytelling possibilities from the premise.

This marks Yeon's fourth invitation to Cannes. His previous works, including 'The King of Pigs,' Train to Busan, and 'Peninsula,' were also invited to the festival.

Yeon expressed his excitement, saying he is honored to present 'Colony' at a global film celebration, especially in the Midnight Screening section.

For the cast, including Jun Ji-hyun and Koo Kyo-hwan, this will be their first time walking the Cannes red carpet. Yeon added that he looks forward to proudly introducing both the actors and Korean genre cinema to global audiences.

'Colony' follows isolated survivors inside a quarantined building during an unidentified outbreak, as they struggle against evolving infected beings. The film is set for release in May.
