MBC's Friday-Saturday drama 21st Century Lady Consort (also referred to as The Lady Consort) is heating up fast. After strong domestic ratings and buzz, the series has now climbed global rankings as well.
Right after its release on April 11, the drama ranked No. 1 on Disney+ Korea's Top 10, according to FlixPatrol. By April 13, it had risen to No. 4 on Disney+'s global Top 10 TV Shows chart.
It also ranked No. 1 in multiple markets, including Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. The series placed No. 2 in Brazil, No. 4 in Mexico, No. 5 in Canada and Australia, and No. 6 in the United States. Overall, it entered the Top 10 in 44 countries and regions.
The ratings were equally strong in its first week. According to Nielsen Korea, episode 1 recorded 7.8 percent nationwide, making it the No. 1 Friday-Saturday drama. Episode 2 climbed to 9.5 percent nationwide, with a peak of 11.1 percent, topping its time slot.
The show also dominated in buzz. According to Good Data Corporation's FUNdex rankings for the first and second weeks of April, it ranked No. 1 in TV-OTT drama buzzworthiness. It also placed first across community response, social media, and news coverage.
A Rom-Com Built for K-Drama Fans
The Lady Consort brings together nearly every element romantic comedy fans love. It imagines 21st-century South Korea as a constitutional monarchy and pairs that fantasy setup with lavish, visually striking cinematography.
The casting of Byeon Woo-seok and IU has also proven to be a winning combination. Following the success of Lovely Runner, Byeon appears poised to spark another wave of popularity. IU, meanwhile, remains one of the most reliable names in the industry, backed by both star power and proven acting ability.
Viewers have already made their choice. Much of the excitement centers on the sweet romantic chemistry between the two leads and the drama's focus on delivering exactly the kind of rom-com feeling audiences had been waiting for.
Strong Start, but a Few Questions Remain
There are still a few points that may need refinement. Some viewers may find the series overloaded with setup. For example, Seong Hee-joo's emotional conflict feels less convincing at times. Although she is the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy family, she appears to lack for nothing and even confidently stands up to her legitimate older brother, which makes her sense of deprivation harder to fully relate to.
Lee An Daegun may also need more character adjustment. He is presented as an almost unrealistically perfect male lead, straight out of a romance comic. True to the genre, he does not easily reveal emotional changes. But in the first week, the drama appeared to focus more heavily on visual moments such as shower scenes and physique shots, which left less room for deeper psychological expression from Byeon Woo-seok.
Episode 3 of The Lady Consort will air on April 16.
