[Dispatch=Reporter Jeong Tae-yun] The film 'Salmokji' (directed by Lee Sang-min) has risen to the second highest-grossing horror film of all time.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network, 'Salmokji' surpassed 2.69 million cumulative viewers on the 4th. It has climbed to the second position in Korea's all-time box office rankings for horror films, surpassing 'Gonjiam' which was released in 2018.
Setting a new record in eight years, it has breathed new life into the Korean horror film market. 'Salmokji' has continued its long-run success, recording steady audience influx without any decline since its release.
By presenting the trend of experiential horror to theaters, it is delivering immersion differentiated from existing horror films. It is maintaining a stable position in the upper ranks of the box office while generating voluntary word-of-mouth from actual viewers.
'Salmokji' depicts the story that unfolds when an unidentifiable shape is captured on Street View, and a filming crew heading to a reservoir for reshooting encounters something in the deep, dark water.
Meanwhile, real-time reservation rates (as of 4 p.m. and 49 minutes on the 4th) show new releases performing strongly. 'Super Mario Galaxy' is in first place with a 37.9% reservation rate. Second place is 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'. Third place is 'Salmokji'.
