"Kang Dong-won headspins, Eom Tae-gu JYP rap"…WILD THING, 'I's fierce comeback
by. Kim So Jung

[Dispatch=Reporter Kim So-jung] Entertainment industry introverts gathered in a quiet practice room. As music played through the awkward air, they stood up one by one and silently performed headspins and rapid-fire rap.

Kang Dong-won, Eom Tae-gu, and Park Ji-hyun were the main characters. They reunited as members of "Triangle," a co-ed group that once topped the music charts. Each put their soul into their respective roles—dance machine, storm rapper, and center.

Joining them was "Eardrum boyfriend" Oh Jung-se. He plays Choi Sung-gon, an unfortunate ballad singer stuck in second place for 38 weeks behind "Triangle." Oh Jung-se's appearance stemmed from curiosity.

"Can you not imagine it? Kang Dong-won dancing? Eom Tae-gu rapping? Park Ji-hyun as an idol? Me doing ballads? When I think like that, question marks appear, and those points sparked my interest."

The film "Wild Thing" held its production press conference on the morning of the 7th at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University Station. Director Son Jae-gon, Kang Dong-won, Eom Tae-gu, Park Ji-hyun, and Oh Jung-se attended.

The scene was a gathering of introverts. However, everyone shared the same desire to make the film funny. Kang Dong-won showed confidence, saying, "I truly danced and filmed with only the heart to make people laugh."

◆ Dance Machine, Survival Machine

"Wild Thing" is a comeback story of the three-member co-ed group "Triangle" that swept the music industry. It's a comedy about them taking reckless challenges to seize an opportunity.

Kang Dong-won played "Hwang Hyun-woo," the leader of "Triangle." He handles dance and vocals. After the group disbanded, his character survives in the entertainment industry out of necessity. "A character who wants to keep working but is being forgotten," he explained.

The reason for choosing comedy was simple. "What I like best is comedy. First of all, the script was so fun, and I loved the tightly packed comedy with a tightly wrapped ending. I liked the story of four people running toward the ending," he hinted.

The headspin revealed in the still was the result of five months of practice. "My understanding of hip-hop was zero. When I got the script, I only thought about how funny it would be if I did a headspin. I didn't know breakdancing, and my feet weren't landing properly. It's a dance that defies gravity," he said with a wry laugh.

Still, he felt the result was lacking. "I tend to practice a lot before filming. I was so disappointed. If I had more time to practice, I could have done another half rotation," he said.

Oh Jung-se recalled his first meeting with Kang Dong-won. "When I went to the practice room, he was always in that position," he reminisced. Park Ji-hyun praised Kang Dong-won's dedication, saying, "He was so sweaty I was worried."

◆ Storm Rapper, Flop Rapper

Eom Tae-gu played "Gu Sang-gu," the maknae and main rapper of "Triangle." After the group disbanded, he released a solo album but it flopped. Currently, buried in debt, he's surviving as an insurance planner.

Known as an entertainment industry power introvert, Eom Tae-gu was different this time. "On the day of stage filming, I did it with the mindset that I would die if I wasn't cute in this role. I was inspired watching senior Kang Dong-won practice next to me," he laughed.

For perfect rap, he actually visited a real entertainment agency. "I commuted to JYP Entertainment every day. I didn't see the idols, but I practiced every day in a private booth," he said.

With such a dramatic transformation, were there moments of regret? "I only regret it when my acting comes out lacking or when a scene passes where I think this wasn't funny but that would have been funnier," he answered.

He met Kang Dong-won 10 years after "Hidden Time." "One reason I chose this project was because of senior," he said. However, both being introverts, they communicated via text during filming, he revealed.

Kang Dong-won confessed, "I did that during 'Hidden Time' too, and this time we're in the same group, but since he's so quiet, we didn't have much conversation. We talked via text."

◆ Absolute Charm, Absolute Wealth

Park Ji-hyun took on the center role of "Domi." She's the owner of refreshing energy and absolute charm. In reality, she has an outgoing personality. After the group disbanded, she marries into a chaebol family and gains immense wealth.

Park Ji-hyun, with her innocent appearance, said, "I had a strong thirst for comedy. I also had a desire to express a character like Domi with duality. After watching 'Wild Thing,' I felt I could meet a work that would satisfy my thirst for comedy."

To realize "Domi," she searched for videos of all female idols at the time. "I did an interview like that before. I said I wanted to sing explosively and dance on stage, and this time I experienced it vicariously," she said contentedly.

On the day of stage filming, she was overshadowed by Kang Dong-won and Eom Tae-gu. "After preparing for a long time, I stood on stage. But the seniors were so good. Senior Dong-won was absorbed in dance, and senior Tae-gu was showing charisma with so many winks," she said, flustered.

She continued, "Afterward, I was so disappointed. I was pushed back. I'm the center, but those two tore it up." Then Kang Dong-won emphasized, "No. I said something to Ji-hyun after filming. That she has a stage presence. She shined on stage."

◆ Hunting Hearts, Really Hunting

Oh Jung-se goes out as ballad singer "Choi Sung-gon." After hunting hearts, he's currently hunting wild boar. "While working as a harmful animal hunter, he unexpectedly gets the opportunity to stand on stage and runs toward his dream," he introduced.

The long-haired visuals and elegant gestures were completed after discussion with director Son. "It came out after many discussions and many attempts. Actually, there was originally a shorter hairstyle option," he revealed.

He added, "If expressed ordinarily, it would seem bland, but it couldn't be overdone either. Strong gestures within restrained movements were necessary. There was no celebrity reference," he elaborated.

His solo track is an addictive ballad. "When I first received this masterpiece, I laughed in vain. The more I listened, the more I liked it. The lyrics are good too," he showed affection.

"Triangle" also wanted a "LOVE IS" challenge. Kang Dong-won specifically mentioned BTS. "It would be an honor if you joined us," he requested. Oh Jung-se said, "I want to sing the song with (host) Park Kyung-rim."

Finally, Kang Dong-won wrapped up, "I hope through this film, people recall their shining times and enjoy it happily." Eom Tae-gu hoped, "I hope watching the film becomes a time when you can laugh a lot."
