by. TaeYun Jeong

[Dispatch=Reporter Jeong Tae-yun] Singer PSY conducted a special interview with CNN as a representative of K-pop.

PSY appeared as an interviewee in the K-pop section of the newly premiered documentary series "K-Everything," which first aired on the 9th (Korean time). The series is hosted by actor and producer Daniel Dae Kim.

"K-Everything" is a program that sheds light on the global influence and roots of Korean culture, which recently leads worldwide cultural trends. Spanning four episodes, it covers Korean culture broadly loved globally, including K-pop, drama, food, and beauty. PSY discussed the history and recent trends of K-pop on the program.

Daniel Dae Kim introduced PSY as having established P Nation on the back of the massive global success of "Gangnam Style," and noted that his annual concert series "Sseulsseul Show" accounts for over 10% of total ticket sales across Korea.

Regarding "Sseulsseul Show," PSY said, "When I perform, I do so for about four hours. When I was young, I was happy if others were happy. I think my concerts are the pinnacle of happiness."

He added, "If I perform in front of 25,000 audience members, I'm seeing 25,000 faces happy because of me right in front of me. At that moment, I feel I would have no regrets even if I died."

He also shared an anecdote about "Gangnam Style." Daniel Dae Kim noted that "Released in 2012, it broke into the American market and completely changed the status of K-pop. It was the first YouTube video to surpass one billion views within six months of its release."

PSY said, "You don't know what it means to Korean Americans to hear a song with lyrics entirely in Korean playing on American radio," and shared an anecdote about Tiger JK pulling over on the highway, crying, and calling him.

They also exchanged views on the statue of "Gangnam Style" erected in Gangnam. PSY said, "To be honest, I'm embarrassed and it's too much." Daniel Dae Kim praised him, saying, "What PSY has achieved through music holds significant meaning not only for Korea but for the entire world."

Regarding the success of "Gangnam Style," PSY revealed the torment of a creator, saying, "As a singer, I enjoy that success for life, but as a composer, it is both a dream and a nightmare. How can I create something with better results than this song?"

Meanwhile, the "K-Everything" series will stream live weekly on CNN.com, CNN Connected TV, and the mobile app. In Korea, it can be watched on Coupang Play.
