[Dispatch=Lee Myung-joo] Evolving zombies have taken over Korean theaters.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system, ‘Colony’ (directed by Yeon Sang-ho) attracted 199,768 moviegoers on May 21. The film ranked No. 1 at the box office on its opening day.
It recorded the highest opening-day score among films released this year. It surpassed the 10-million-viewer hit ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’ (117,783 admissions) and ‘Salmokji’ (89,911 admissions), the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
The film is expected to continue its box office dominance for the time being. As of May 22, it had accumulated 262,202 advance reservations. It is also maintaining an 87% score on CGV’s Egg Index, which reflects ratings from verified moviegoers.
‘Colony’ is director Yeon Sang-ho’s latest work and one installment of his zombie trilogy. The film was recently screened in the Midnight Screening section at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival, where it met audiences from around the world.
The film introduces an upgraded form of zombies. It follows survivors trapped inside a sealed building as they confront infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways.
Meanwhile, ‘Michael’ ranked second on the day with 29,293 admissions. ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ followed with 9,413 moviegoers.
