[Dispatch=Reporter Lee A-jin] "I achieved another dream today." (Kim Se-jung)
The debut process of 11 girls was like a miracle. They broke through 101-to-1 competition and were chosen by national producers. But the time from debut to farewell was merely eight months. Without even completing an official fanclub name, it became a memory.
That fleeting moment left a deep echo for 10 years. Fans and members alike endured the long wait. And so I.O.I came together as one again. From the release of their 10th anniversary album 'I.O.I: LOOP' to concert tours, they embarked on the journey.
The process of making this miraculous reunion happen was not smooth. Members were already active as solo singers, actors, and more under their respective agencies. Even coordinating simple schedules was difficult.
But the members' sincerity was solid. Ju Gyul-kyung and Kang Mi-na were unable to participate due to scheduled commitments, but their hearts were together. Kang Mi-na visited the concert rehearsal and sent her support.
The fans' cheers mixed excitement and emotion. The members felt the same way. When tears welled up during performances, they comforted each other.
I.O.I held concert tour 'LOOP' at Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul from the 29th to the 31st. Approximately 13,000 fans attended over three days. They performed 25 songs over approximately 180 minutes.
◆ Miss Me?
The opening song was 'Pick Me'. As soon as the familiar and heartwarming intro began, thunderous cheers filled the venue. The entire audience sang along from the first verse to the last note.
"One, two, three, four, mic check one, two"
Before even three seconds of the intro passed, a collective chant erupted. It was their debut song 'Dream Girls'. The members danced with even more energy. They conveyed the fresh energy from their debut days intact, drawing out fan chants.
They heated up the atmosphere further with 'What U Wanna Do'. Originally released as a unit track. But for the first time since debut, they unveiled a complete version. Midway through the song, they formed three-member units and showed intense dance breaks.
After the opening, the members poured out their overwhelming emotions. Chungha smiled saying, "I missed your energy so much." Kim So-hye confessed, "I was really nervous dancing for the first time in 10 years."
Smooth vocal tracks like 'Knock Knock Knock', 'Doo Wap', and 'Love You, Remember You' followed. When members finally held up the newly created official lightstick, fans lifted theirs in unison. They created a pink wave.
◆ 101 Memories
"Shall we take a time travel back to 10 years ago?" (Yoo Yeon-jung)
This was a section that triggered the strongest nostalgia. Members built anticipation from the start. They said, "We filled this section with songs that fans said they most wanted to see at fan sign events."
Living up to expectations, medleys of songs from 'Produce 101' performance rounds burst out. True to the hit songs that shook South Korea back then, fans poured out overwhelming decibels of cheers.
'Fingertips' and 'Yum Yum' were refreshing. When the beat of '24 Hours' kicked in, the venue instantly transformed into a club. Spectacular fireworks brought the atmosphere to its peak.
They added 'Crush', a final round track, to the setlist. I.O.I's synchronized choreography seen after 10 years. Each time parts switched, excited cheers erupted from the audience.
◆ Now, Us
The next section showcased I.O.I's present. They ran through new songs without pause. Members refreshed the mood by performing 'Suddenly' and 'SFP 100'. Especially in 'Suddenly', fans' soft collective chant added emotional depth.
There was good news too. On the day of the concert, 'Suddenly' topped the music charts. Members relished the joy with fans. Jeon So-mi couldn't hide her emotion saying, "This is a story you'd rarely see even in a drama."
The song 'I.O.I', sharing the team name as its title, played. Members charged forcefully onto the extended stage and burned their energy. Fans also responded with loud voices whenever the lyric "I.O.I" appeared.
Jeon So-mi wrote this song herself. Right after the performance, she revealed behind-the-scenes details saying, "I wrote the lyrics while imagining I.O.I members standing on stage." Fans expressed emotional admiration repeatedly.
"The next song is one you've all been waiting for~" (Kim Se-jung)
Before Se-jung even finished speaking, the audience stirred. A deafening cheer erupted. Soon after, the mega-hit song 'So Much Much Much' stage unfolded. The performance remained as cute as time stood still, and fans' shoulders continued to move.
◆ Pick Me Up Again
The finale was a series of bittersweet moments. Sentimental tracks that reddened eyes followed. 'In the Same Place' was previously presented without choreography at past concerts. But this time, they added performance to trigger nostalgia.
They then performed 'Just a Moment', 'Rain', 'Us Back Then', 'When Cherry Blossoms Fall', in sequence. Tears glistened at Se-jung's eyes as she sang 'Rain'. So-mi wiped away tears while performing 'When Cherry Blossoms Fall'.
The encore was legendary. They recreated the 'Bang Bang' stage that drew the most attention at 'Produce 101'. The moment Choi Yu-jung's signature killing part came, the venue erupted with a deafening cheer.
The heat extended below the stage. Members came down to the audience. They performed 'Do As I Say', 'If I', 'Goodbye With a Smile' and made eye contact with fans. Fans waved their hands enthusiastically to warmly welcome this miraculous reunion.
Finally, Lim Na-young said, "I really missed the stage. I'm happy to have achieved this dream." Jeong Chae-yeon confessed, "I think I really love performing. I was so happy." Kim Do-yeon promised, "Next time, I'll take on Chungha's role and bring the members back together again."
The concert's ending, true to the title 'LOOP's meaning, headed back to the beginning. 'Pick Me' played. Members and fans sang together through the last verse. They engraved one more eternal memory deep in their hearts.
