'Friends' Director Passes Away on the 19th…"Brought Great Joy to Viewers"

[Dispatch=Reporter Lee Myung-joo] James Burrows (Jimmy Burrows), the "sitcom godfather," has passed away. He was 85.

U.S. media outlet People released a statement from his family on the 20th (Korean time). "Director Burrows passed away peacefully on the 19th surrounded by his beloved family," it said.

It continued, "He was a director and mentor who remained at the top for over half a century" and "brought incomparable joy to viewers both domestically and abroad."

Director Burrows was a producer of hit sitcoms worldwide. In addition to "Friends," he directed "Cheers," "Frasier," "The Big Bang Theory," and "Will & Grace."

His prolific work earned him numerous awards. He was recognized for his contributions at major award ceremonies, including 11 Primetime Emmy Awards and 5 Directors Guild of America Awards.

Actors who worked with him shared tributes. Matt LeBlanc recalled, "Jimmy, the impact you had on us and those around you cannot be put into words."

He added, "You were a true icon in every way. I hope you always have good fortune (even in heaven). We will really miss you," in his condolence message.

David Schwimmer also remembered, "Because of your warmth and humility, we felt comfortable (throughout filming). You always looked after us both in front of and behind the camera."

Finally, he wrote, "Jimmy, we already miss you. We will be forever grateful (for our time together)" and "Thank you so much for being a wonderful director, mentor, and friend."
