Bayon has taken its first step into the music industry. The group of six members—Masato, Sen, Ayang, Jinwei, Teru, and Mano—sings stories of youth.
The members differ in age and nationality. The youngest, Mano, and the oldest, Masato, are six years apart. Masato, Sen, and Teru are from Japan. Ayang and Jinwei are Chinese, and Mano is Korean.
That is why the youth that Bayon depicts is more diverse than most. It is not simply a narrative revisiting childhood memories. They unfold the emotions they experience in this present moment on stage.
In their debut album, they put forward the excitement of a first start and good energy upfront. Teru expressed confidence, saying, "If you see our expressions after the stage ends, you will immediately know what emotion we want to convey."
Bayon held a showcase on the 6th at NOL Theatre Hapjeong Dongyangseongmyeong Hall in Mapo-gu, Seoul to commemorate the release of their debut album "Youth Today."
"Youth Today" is an album that compares the appearance of youth to weather. It started from the question "What is youth like today?" It captured the moments of youth that exist in everyone's lives.
The album contains a total of five tracks: "SUPER LUCKY SONG," "MUAH!," "Got It," "Watta Day," and "Where My Youth Lives."
The title track is "MUAH!" It is a high-teen dance pop genre characterized by bright and refreshing energy. The hot summer sun is interpreted as a signal of love and the trembling of youth.
Masato said, "When I first heard the song, I really liked the part 'It shows when I see you' in the second verse highlight," and added, "The right expression came to mind as soon as I heard the lyrics. I really wanted to pull it off."
The key choreography is the "cheek poke dance." Sen introduced it as "clenching a fist and riding the rhythm, then poking the cheek with the index finger." Masato hinted, "We will also showcase a challenge with added aegyo to that part."
The music video was completed against the backdrop of Jeju Island's blue fields. Jinwei laughed, saying, "It rained a lot, so our clothes got wet and filming was stopped several times. Still, I'm happy the result turned out pretty."
The unexpected weather aligned with the album's theme. From the rain to the moments when fog rolled in, it was captured as that day's youth. Mano recalled, "We actually utilized the fog on the spot. Thanks to that, a more diverse atmosphere was created."
On this day, Bayon also premiered the title track "MUAH!" and the B-side "Watta Day." In "MUAH!", cute facial expressions stood out. The members winked in time with the "cheek poke dance."
In the "Watta Day" stage, soft vocals first captured the ear. At the same time, the relentless performance that followed drew attention. In particular, Teru's aerial flip choreography added to the vibrant energy.
Four of the six members are from Mnet's survival show "Boys Planet." Masato, Sen, Ayang, and Jinwei went through fierce competition. Though they did not make it to the debut lineup, they regrouped and took the stage as Bayon.
Sen said, "Even during the survival show, I was only grateful with the thought that we could get closer to our dreams," and revealed, "So I think we didn't separately weave difficult emotions into the debut album."
Instead, they expressed gratitude to the fans who waited for them in a B-side track. It is "Where My Youth Lives." The members expressed through lyrics the feeling that they become each other's sanctuary—between members and between members and fans.
All members participated in writing the lyrics. Masato wrote the part "Like our butterfly, let's fly away." He explained, "When I saw the shape of the team logo that Sen created, I thought of a butterfly. I wanted to express the hope of flying like a butterfly."
Mano compared the difficult moments encountered on the path of youth to rain. He said, "I wanted to tell a hopeful story," and shared, "I wrote the lyrics thinking of the message 'rain will stop someday.'"
Bayon was produced by Kim Jae-joong. Kim Jae-joong personally selected the "youth" concept. He also offered advice so members could freely express their own stories.
Mano said, "Producer Jae-joong talked a lot about manners," and added, "He said that by greeting well and having good manners, people around you will view you positively, and that is how you can grow more. I am keeping that message in mind."
Ayang gained confidence from Kim Jae-joong's words. He relayed, "Producer Jae-joong told me, 'Even if 99 out of 100 people dislike you, if even one person likes you, you should do your best.'"
Finally, the members shared their aspirations. Jinwei said, "Before I was a trainee, when I was in school, I didn't know much," and added, "But standing on the debut stage, I realize that this moment is youth. I will work hard going forward."
Mano said, "I want to become a group that represents youth. I hope that when people see us, they can recall their own youth."
Meanwhile, Bayon will release "Youth Today" on various music sites on the 6th at 6 p.m.
