I-DLE is showcasing yet another music style. It's a summer song, but it doesn't follow the common formula. They chose heat over freshness. The girl crush styling also stands out.
Soyeon explained, "We've been pursuing hot and provocative music so far, but this time we wanted to show various colors. After deep discussions with the members, we tried to focus on the essence."
They blended their original intention into the change. Miyeon said, "We felt that recent albums had overheated passion. We talked about returning to zero—the heart we had when we first loved music—and putting our hearts into it."
"As always, we prepared with our best effort. We hope many people will enjoy and love it together this summer." (Miyeon)
I-DLE held a showcase commemorating the release of their 9th mini album "We made" at Yes24 Hall in Gwangjin-gu on the 6th.
"We made" carries a different pop appeal from before. It signaled an evolved musical world. Soyeon revealed, "Unlike the "I made" we showed before, we wanted to show new challenges."
Even in their 9th year since debut, they still speak of "change." Soyeon laughed, "To be honest, being in our 9th year, we also got tired of ourselves. We felt like we wanted to do something new and fun."
She continued, "After taking on many challenges, we thought 'what kind of story could we tell?' We want to keep making music, we like fun things, and we want change. I think this becomes our driving force."
They've maintained a string of hits across various genres including "LATATA," "Han," "DUMDi DUMDi," "Oh my god," "TOMBOY," "Queencard," and "Nxde."
Miyeon also looked back on their activities so far. "Since members have been producing from way back, sometimes we felt trapped in our own color. It's not that it was wrong, but we had a lot of concerns," she recalled.
She said, "We felt that recent albums had slightly overheated passion. At the same time, we talked about going back to our first love of music. It's an album that means something to us."
The title track is "Gimme Dat Love." It depicts a love like thirst—a moment of being strongly drawn to each other. It's a song that expresses emotions honestly. LA-based top-tier producers participated.
Though it's a summer song, they chose heat. Soyeon said, "We've released summer songs like 'DUMDi DUMDi' and 'Klaxon.' 'Han' was also a summer song led by coolness. We wanted to show various colors of summer."
She added genre considerations: "While preparing the comeback, we thought 'What is good music? Something that does well commercially? Addictive trendy music? Or our story, even if boring?' We thought of various things."
Soyeon explained, "Ultimately, I felt that good music is something anyone, anytime, can enjoy and feel moved by. The talk of focusing on essence naturally melted into our song."
As a result, I-DLE has been showing a shift in musical style starting from "Mono." They've moved away from intense and bold moods. Rather than chasing trends, they're reducing force and focusing on essence.
"Gimme Dat Love" boasts high addictiveness. In particular, the chorus section where "Love" repeats makes you want to sing along once you hear it. The choreography utilizing arm movements is also a point. I-DLE's confidence is infused in it.
The new album contains a total of 6 tracks. Including the pre-released song "Crow," it also includes "Morning," "Love Is Pian," and a mono version of "Mono (Feat. skaiwater)," a CD-only track.
"Love Is Pian" is Yuqi's original composition, capturing the feeling of not being able to easily let go even after love ends. "Morning" is an upbeat daily life song. It depicts a happy day within small everyday moments.
"Crow," released during the world tour, received fan response. It dealt with crows symbolizing misfortune. They portrayed the group's subjectivity—moving forward without wavering in any situation—in I-DLE's own way.
Performance is also an anticipated point. Jeon Soyeon wears a hood and unleashes rap. The pair choreography of Yuqi and Minnie used handcuffs. They completed synchronized choreography with male and female dancers. They completed an I-DLE-like stage.
Soyeon previously worked on songwriting and composition under the name "icebluerabbit." Icebluerabbit appears in this album too. She said, "I wanted to do something new rather than Jeon Soyeon's music."
She added, "I pursued hot and provocative music. Icebluerabbit is music you can enjoy without thinking," and noted, "As I kept trying, it seems icebluerabbit itself has now melted in."
I-DLE recently successfully completed a Taipei Dome concert—the first by a K-pop girl group. The Hong Kong KaiTak Stadium drew 80,000 people over two days. They proved their global influence.
Yuqi smiled and said, "So many fans came that it doesn't feel real. Thinking 'We filled a large venue and became cool singers thanks to our fans,' I felt proud and grateful."
She emphasized the power of music: "Even though they don't speak Korean, I was moved seeing them sing along in Korean. I felt the value of making music. I pledged to work harder," she added.
They also have the main stage at "Lollapalooza" in Chicago on the 31st. Minnie said firmly, "It's an honor. We'll take the stage powerfully and coolly and tear it up."
Soyeon conveyed their goal: "I hope our songs ring out in many places and reach many people. We want them to feel the heat," she laughed, also saying, "and we want to get first place too."
Yuqi said a word to the members: "I hope we don't lose our original intention and stay healthy. We heard the saying 'This moment is the youngest we'll ever be in our lives.' Let's be healthy and happy."
Meanwhile, I-DLE will release their new album on major music sites at 6 p.m. on the 6th.
