[Dispatch=Lee Myeong-ju Reporter] Director Lee Chang-dong is heading to the Venice Film Festival with his new film "Potential Love."

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival opened on September 2 (Korea time) on the Lido Island in Venice, Italy. The opening film is "Ink" directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle.

"Potential Love," directed by Lee Chang-dong, has advanced to the competition section of the Venice Film Festival. It will compete for the Golden Lion award against 20 other works.

This marks the first time in approximately 24 years that his film has been selected for the Venice Film Festival's competition section. With "Oasis" (2002), he won the Best Director award and Best Newcomer Award, among others.

This marks a consecutive two-year achievement for Korean cinema in producing award-contending films. Last year, director Park Chan-wook advanced to the competition section with "No Way Out."

"Potential Love" is Lee Chang-dong's first Netflix film. It tells the story of two couples who meet to produce a documentary and confront their hidden desires.

Before its release, it has swept prestigious film festivals worldwide. In addition to the Venice Film Festival, it received invitations to the 51st Toronto International Film Festival and the 64th New York Film Festival.

Meanwhile, the Venice Film Festival will close on September 12 with the awards ceremony.
