'Scandal,' three viewing points... "Son Ye-jin X Nana, relationship narrative"

[Dispatch=Reporter Lee Myung-joo] A daring love wager that will captivate the world beyond the walls of Bukchon begins.

The Netflix series 'Scandal' (screenplay by Lee Seung-young and Ahn Hae-sung, directed by Jung Ji-woo) has highlighted key points to watch. These include a unique narrative, acting ensemble, and distinctive production.

'Scandal' is a contemporary reinterpretation of the novel 'Dangerous Liaisons' (1782). It depicts in multidimensional fashion the desires of various characters who go against Joseon's taboos.

In particular, it more finely explores the relationships between female characters not present in the original work. The story of Lady Jo (played by Son Ye-jin) and Hee-yeon (played by Nana) has been added, expanding the narrative.

The acting ensemble completed by the cast also deserves attention. Son Ye-jin returns to historical drama after approximately 24 years. Taking on the role of Lady Jo, she displays a captivating charm.

Ji Chang-wook plays Jo Won. He portrays the multifaceted emotional lines of the character, from being consumed by desire for what cannot be possessed to displaying a free-spirited side.

Nana takes on her first historical drama role since debut. She plays Hee-yeon, who becomes entangled with them due to the wager between Lady Jo and Jo Won. She expresses the changes in her life with nuance.

Director Jung Ji-woo explained, "All three have a large gap between their 'revealed self' and 'hidden self,'" and added, "The tension and push-and-pull between the three of them is the draw."

'Scandal' also features its own distinctive production. It adds contemporary sensibility to period-specific details. The most representative example is the letters they exchange.

The presentation of letters does not simply stop at showing them. It employs voiceover narration through the voices of the three characters. This conveys emotion more vividly.

The direction utilizing pansori and folk paintings also catches the eye. Pansori encapsulates the situations within the drama. Folk paintings enhance the charm of historical drama through the moving protagonists.

Meanwhile, 'Scandal' is the story of Hee-yeon, entangled in a daring and dangerous love wager between Lady Jo and Jo Won. First released on the 18th at 5 p.m.
