[ⓓINTERVIEW] "Turning question marks into exclamation marks"…Park Yunho, the efforts behind making 'Un'
by. TaeYun Jeong

[Dispatch=Reporter Jung Tae-yoon] "I think it's luck, since it came after considering many different possibilities."

Park Yunho explained the past time that way. A year ago, when he met on Netflix's 'Trigger', there was no next project. He was going around to auditions.

He was an actor who left curiosity through dramas 'Study Group' and 'Unknown Seoul', but when the next work would arrive was uncertain.

A year later, things are different. He left a reversal presence with 'Vole', and Tving's 'Proxy Suneung' and the film 'Land' await release, while in 'Promoter' he is considering the weight of a leading role.

Much has changed. Yet Park Yunho did not wholly credit that result to his own abilities.

He believes it is the result of good works, good people, good timing, and countless variables aligning. That is why, rather than being greedy, he wants to hold onto this luck for longer.

"There may come a disappointing day someday. Even if it does, I'm holding my spirit down so I won't be upset or carried away. Telling myself, 'You've received a lot of good things.' (laughs)"

Within that, he was gradually expanding what he could do as an actor. Dispatch met Park Yunho again after a year.

# Hero of the Reversal

Park Yunho, whom we met a year ago, was an actor who left a strong impression in Netflix's 'Trigger'. In 'Study Group' and in 'Unknown Seoul' too, whenever he appeared he created curiosity of "Who is that?"

'Vole' took it a step further. He hid his appearance until midway, then appeared and reversed the flow of the story. Seo Yumin is entangled with Je Moonjae (played by Ryu Jun-yeol) from the past.

He decides to steal Je Moonjae's face and identity for revenge. He is a character who amplifies narrative curiosity through complicated feelings toward Moonjae and inscrutable inner thoughts.

Understanding Yumin of 'Vole' came with one special assignment. He had to act the same character as Ryu Jun-yeol. He didn't even know at the audition that he was the hero of the reversal.

He recalled, "The script for episodes 9-10 was completed late. I received the script during a school class. I went to the bathroom saying I was leaving, read the script, and thought something was wrong."

Episodes 9-10 are the key scenes where the true identity of the vole is revealed and Yumin and Moonjae engage in close combat. Park Yunho said, "The pressure was enormous. I had ambition but it wasn't easy."

# One Face, Two People

'Vole' does not clearly separate the faces of Je Moonjae and Seo Yumin. In the end, it deliberately blurs the boundary between the two faces and voices, creating confusion about "who is this person I'm looking at."

Park Yunho said, "The director advised me to watch a lot of Jun-yeol senior's previous works. While watching the works, I grasped the tone and practiced to give a similar feeling."

Study continued after filming began. He said, "Before important scenes, we communicated and exchanged opinions. After my shooting was done, if there was a scene I was curious about, I would watch more before leaving."

Ryu Jun-yeol's advice was also a big help. He said, "The senior told me, 'I'd like for you to know the entire narrative of Vole.' That way the character would be clearer. Before that, I was busy doing my part, but I learned that I need to see the whole picture."

"When I saw the whole picture, I saw more things. I realized what the senior was doing. On set too, he continuously gave me small tips from beside me and told me 'You'll look better if you do it this way here.'"

# Learning Over the Shoulder

He also learned acting outside the script. Park Yunho said, "In the past flashback scene, there's a moment where Moonjae gets angry and throws a beer can. Actually, it wasn't in the script as an action. But it felt more like Moonjae and more three-dimensional."

Especially in episode 10, the final scene where Moonjae and Yumin wrestle and settle things was tension itself. He said, "The character becomes deeper, the seniors' stories pile up and we head toward the peak, and I was very tense about whether I could decorate the ending well."

He continued, "In the final scene, I watched the senior rehearse and observed his breathing closely. The senior frequently brushed his hair back. When I got hit and fell, I tried to do the same."

"I learned that the moment of acting isn't everything. Especially, I learned how to make the set comfortable. Before, I couldn't approach seniors first, but now I ask first. Then they actually like me more and teach me more."

# First Leading Role

In his next work, he takes on a leading role. Park Yunho said, "It's just the early stages of filming now. We're scheduled to film until early next year, and right now I can only think of the next project. It's my first time investing proper time for a role and doing something. It feels good, like becoming a different person."

Regarding his first leading role, he said, "The pressure is great. The range of my concerns seems to have changed a lot. There are many more things I need to think about beyond my own character."

"Before, what was most important was doing well with the role I was given. Now I think about the breathing with the actors in that scene, the atmosphere of the set, and what role I should play in the whole work."

He is starting with small changes. Park Yunho said, "When I see a staff member wearing a soccer uniform, I say 'What team do you like?' I'm trying to approach everyone on set in a friendly manner."

Responsibility has also grown. "Until now, it was closer to being noticed because the work itself went well, but now I think I need to do my part well. I think I can only become the actor I've dreamed of if I do this, difficult as it is."

# More Than Just Luck…

Of course, luck is important to an actor. What work you meet, who you work with, when you are discovered by the public. There are many variables you cannot decide alone.

But if you look carefully at the past year, there are scenes that are hard to explain by luck alone. He went through audition after audition, and after seizing opportunity, he dug in irreplaceably.

Park Yunho still auditions. What has changed is that now someone watches him and dreams.

He said, "I met the director of 'Study Group' not long ago, and when they asked the actors who came to season 2 auditions who was attractive in the previous season, they apparently talked a lot about me. I thought that wasn't quite me yet, so it was strange," and laughed.

His ambition remains modest. "I want to enjoy it slowly and for a long time. I want to expand bit by bit within what I can do. If I'm given a lot at once, it would feel burdensome," he said.

His new goal was not grand either. "For now, I just want to finish the work I'm currently filming well," he said, and emphasized, "And since I'll be working with amazing seniors in the remaining projects ahead, I want to do better."
