Actors Nam Ji-hyun and Kim Jae-young have met through a romance project. The love the two will show is provocative yet warm. Though they used the daring subject of adult products, within it lies a love story anyone can relate to.
A man and woman with opposite values about love constantly clash to make each other understand their perspectives. Through their petty squabbles, they create pleasant excitement.
It doesn't stop at a simple romance story. It also depicts how the two people, facing different worlds, gradually change. Understanding each other, breaking their own molds, and growing a step further.
On the 14th, the production team of Tving original series "Let Me Tremble" held a production presentation at Stanford Hotel Seoul in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Director Yeji Kim, Nam Ji-hyun, and Kim Jae-young attended.
"Let Me Tremble" is a coming-of-age romance drama. It depicts the story of a woman who doesn't engage in deep physical intimacy without love meeting a man who enjoys physical intimacy without love.
Nam Ji-hyun took on the role of Kong Yeon-su. Kong Yeon-su is a marketing company employee. Born as the eldest daughter of a head family, she is a lifelong Confucianist. She believes there is a set order even in relationships, but gradually opens her heart when she meets a man opposite to her.
Nam Ji-hyun said, "Most importantly, the subject matter was fresh," and "I was drawn to it because it's based on a romantic comedy story that anyone can relate to," explaining her casting motivation.
She focused on the character's growth process. "Yeon-su is a person who fears whether she is trapped in a narrow world," she said, "and she tries to break herself and be reborn in a new form to become a better person."
She continued, "She begins to challenge herself when she meets Dok-go Dal," adding "In that process, she makes mistakes and sometimes acts stubbornly. I felt that such aspects actually resemble our real lives."
Kim Jae-young plays Dok-go Dal. He is the president of adult products company "Lo and D." He is not bound by set orders in people or relationships. He is a free-spirited character who brings new changes to Kong Yeon-su's daily life.
He was captivated by the chemistry between the two leads. He said, "The drama's progression is quite fast," and "The process of the two growing closer also unfolds with great pace, which was interesting," explaining his choice of the project.
It's a character opposite to his real personality. "At first, I wondered if Dok-go Dal lacked too much humanity," he said with a laugh, "but gradually, I came to like his clear convictions and his knife-sharp way of drawing boundaries."
He also sought advice from those around him to bring out the character's rational side. Kim Jae-young recalled, "I have Joo Woo-jae among my close friends," and "I asked a lot about how to look more T-like."
Most importantly, he put effort into expressing sexy charm. "I paid attention to styling and followed the director's directions well," he said, "I hope viewers also feel Dok-go Dal's sexy charm."
The viewing point is the bickering romance between the two leads. They constantly try to convince each other of their differing views on love. The conflict that unfolds within this creates both laughter and empathy.
Nam Ji-hyun said, "The two really fight fiercely," and "They're not simply fighting because they don't understand each other. There are many lines where they constantly persuade each other to make the other understand their thoughts."
The unique chemistry between the two actors is also something to look forward to. In 2018's "100 Days My Prince," they worked together as siblings. This time, however, they reunite as lovers.
Kim Jae-young recalled, "At that time, Ji-hyun felt like my younger sister, but this time while acting, I saw her as a woman," adding "She responds well to reactions and acts well, so our chemistry was very smooth."
Nam Ji-hyun said, "It will come across as fresh to those who remember us appearing as siblings back then," and "If that was a sad relationship, this time there are many scenes that provoke laughter," raising expectations.
The production team also paid attention to implementing the adult products company, a major setting of the drama. To ease preconceptions about the subject matter, they differentiated the space from the start. They created a bright and tasteful atmosphere with refined interiors.
The director said, "I wanted to create a trendy and hip feeling," and "Dok-go Dal is a character who tries to break prejudices about adult products. Rather than rejection, I wanted to create a feeling of 'it would be fun to work in a space like this.'"
The work's distinguishing feature is its realistic common ground. The director said, "Romantic comedies inevitably have strong fantastical elements due to the genre," adding "Within that, I tried to include parts where people of all ages and sexes can recall their own experiences and discuss together."
Finally, Nam Ji-hyun said, "It's a drama that can make your heart flutter at the end of the day," and "I hope you'll enjoy it comfortably as it's at a level suitable to watch with family."
Meanwhile, "Let Me Tremble" will premiere on the 15th at 6 p.m.
