[Dispatch=Reporter Tae Yoon Jeong] An online troll who had subjected actress Shin Se Kyung to intensive threats was sentenced to prison time in the appellate court as well.
The Present Company announced on the 2nd, "On the 22nd of last month, the online troll of actress Shin Se Kyung, who is under our agency, was sentenced to eight months in prison in the appellate trial held at the Seoul Eastern District Court and was placed in custody."
According to the appellate court decision, the defendant repeatedly created insulting posts directed at Shin Se Kyung anonymously over the course of more than two months, numbering in the hundreds. The defendant also posted threatening messages that implied physical harm, targeting even the actress's family.
The court stated, "The victim had to work under anxiety and fear of extreme and bizarre harm being inflicted by the defendant, whom she did not even know," emphasizing the severity of the perpetrator's actions.
The defendant appealed for leniency citing personal circumstances such as depression and reflection. However, the court pointed out that the crimes had no basis or appropriate motive other than expressing the defendant's own anger.
This ruling is seen as symbolically significant in that it held legal responsibility not merely for malicious comments, but for sustained cyber harassment that exploited anonymity.
The agency stated, "We will continue to respond firmly in accordance with a zero-tolerance principle toward illegal acts that infringe upon the rights of our artists, including threats, malicious defamation, injury to reputation, and insult."
The agency added, "This ruling is a valuable result created through efforts together with fans. We deeply thank the fans who provided information by continuously collecting materials over a long period of time. We ask for your continued attention and reports."
