by. hyeseon Yang

"12 minutes, the longest standing ovation in a Korean movie"

The movie 'Broker' (directed by Hirokazu Koreeda) received rave reviews at the Cannes International Film Festival. The audience applauded for 12 minutes. It is a record that surpassed the 10 minutes of the movie 'The Bat' (Director Park Chan-wook).

'Broker' was first released as a world premiere at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival on the 26th (local time). As the end credits went up, a standing ovation erupted from the audience.

Audience Daniella admired 'Dispatch', saying, "The applause was really long. I clapped for a while afterwards, my hands are red as we speak."

Foreign media have coined the term 'K-Cannes'. At the center was a 'Broker'. 'Dispatch' shared that moment.

'Broker' received attention as a highly anticipated film from the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival. The heat of the scene represented the popularity. Even before the screening, the front of the Palais des Festivals was full of spectators looking for screening tickets.

Fans of the movie looked eagerly at each other, holding up paper signs that read 'Broker'. A large billboard was hung on the main street where the film festival was held.

Interest in the lead actors was also high. The reporters filled the photo line. When director Kore-eda, Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, and Lee Joo-young appeared, a camera flash broke out.

In particular, Lee Ji-eun stopped walking before going up on the red carpet. She approached the fans behind the fence. She responded to every request for autographs. The official Cannes camera also followed Lee Ji-eun and her fans.

The 'Broker' team climbed the Lumière steps and enjoyed the atmosphere of Cannes. Song Kang-ho waved his arms to greet him. Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, and Lee Joo-young also worked with the Cannes audience.

'Broker' is the first Korean film directed by Koreeda. He has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for 'A Family' (2018) and the Jury Prize for 'That's How I Become a Father' (2013).

Director Koreeda has shown the story of his family several times. The same goes for 'broker'. It depicts people who do not mix with a single drop of blood gradually becoming a family.

'Broker' begins when So-young (Lee Ji-eun) leaves her baby in front of a baby box. Sang-hyeon (Song Kang-ho) and Dong-su (Kang Dong-won), who steal children, start an unexpected accompaniment.

Every character has their own story. A mother who has to abandon her child, a child from an orphanage with resentment and longing for her parents, and a child trying to go for adoption.

Social issues are also addressed. The reality of abortion, adoption, single mothers, childrearing, and prostitution is exposed. Here, Koreeda's unique humanism was melted, that everyone should have a right to be born.

When the movie was over, the audience got up from their seats and clapped. They also shared their impressions about the 'Broker' with each other. They called out the names of Korean actors everywhere.

Audience Lindsay said to 'Dispatch', "It reminds me of the lives of people that the broker had forgotten. It was a movie that made me think a lot."

The most talked about actor was Lee Ji-eun. The audience Angela said, "I really liked Lee Ji-eun's lullaby scene. Tears came out in the scene where I said 'Thank you for being born' to everyone."

At the beginning of the play, Lee Ji-eun's eyes are full of life. It gradually changes as time goes by when she stayed with the broker and her son changed. She did not miss the subtle facial expression change.

'Filmland Empire' evaluated, "Lee Ji-eun is not inferior to the 1st place for Best Actress." 'Awards Witch' praised, "The soul of this movie is IU. She showed her sincere acting”.

'Broker' is the hot issue of the current Cannes Film Festival. Compared to the explosive heat of the field, critics showed polar opposite reactions.

The American 'Hollywood Reporter' said, "Director Koreeda once again showed his talent." 'W Magazine' asserted that "a film worthy of the Palme d'Or."

'Film Stage' praised, "It is a film that deals with the ethical issues and social philosophical values of an alternative family through an abandoned child. It is lovely and sad."

The 'New York Times' said, "It is a movie that warms the heart and hurts. It is a detailed portrait of the selected family. For immersion, even the crime plot was digested."

On the other hand, 'Deadline' pointed out, "It goes back and forth between excessive sentimentality. It would have been better if the script was a little tighter."

British 'The Guardian' also pointed out, "The character is shallow compared to the crime-drama atmosphere. Song Kang-ho of 'Parasite' is also stuck. It's a rare mistake by director Koreeda."

Meanwhile, 'Broker' will be released in Korea on the 8th of next month (Korean time).
